ART INSPIRATION

King Midas of Phrygia, in Greek Mythology, an acquisitive king of great fortune, lived a life of abundance with his beautiful daughter, he believed his greatest happiness was attained from gold.

Midas was grated one wish by Dionysus (the god of the grape-harvest) following an act of kindness to the god. The greedy king requested all that he touched would turn to gold. This in reality was a curse, for when he hugged his beloved daughter, she turned into a golden statue.

Heartbroken Midas prayed to Dionysus to reverse the wish. The god took pity on the king and did as he asked.

Midas kissed and hugged his daughter. He realised only love and compassion could bring happiness to him. This epiphany compelled him to share his great fortune with his people, who became happy, prosperous and loyal subjects.

"The artwork here is inspired by this myth. In silver and gold leaf the central design visualises Midas’ reunion with his daughter, the stars symbolising his epiphany."
